The Mayor of Sarajevo, Abdulah Skaka paid an official visit to Tirana, the capital city of Albania, where he met with the Mayor Erion Veliaj and was presented with the keys of this sister city. The capital city of BiH and Tirana have been sister cities since 1996 and they cultivate close relations.This visit is an introduction to the additional efforts in the implementation of joint initiatives, closer connections and mutual support in the field of international cooperation.
Mayor Skaka thanked the host for the honour shown to him, stressing that Sarajevo and Tirana have a shared European future and are evolving into true European metropolises and regional centres.
“This is a great honour for me personally and for all the citizens of Sarajevo. Our cities are developing rapidly and we must improve relations, cooperation and framework of networking. The capital cities are not just the key generators of economic development, but they can and should be the leaders in opening political processes and bringing the region closer together. In this light I see our future enhanced partnership” said Skaka.
During the working meeting the mayors Skaka and Veliaj discussed the specific cooperation projects in tourism, exchange of experiences in using EU funds and development opportunities, and the exchange of ideas on the joint approach to foreign markets.
The Mayor of Tirana was particularly interested in the successful experiences of Sarajevo in the construction and operation of the Trebević Cable Car. Furthermore, in view of the upcoming Summit of the Mayors of CEE and China, they discussed the better use of opportunities within the initiative “16+1” which has established a framework for joint activities of regional capitals and foreign investors. The official meeting was also attended by the Honorary Consul of BiH in Albania Fikret Klarić.
