Sarajevo received support for organisation of Formula E race in 2020

The City of Sarajevo received the support from the Formula E top team and the best driver in the world in its candidature for the host of Formula E race in 2020.

Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka, Jean Eric Vergne, driver of Techeetah team, Edmund Chu, team manager and Samir Cerić, manager of Sarajevo Sports International spoke at the Press Conference held in the entrance hall of the Alta Shopping Centre. Techeetah DS E-Tense FE 19 racing car which was brought from Paris for this occasion was presented to the audience.

The hosting of this race would be much more than a sport spectacle for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It would promote economic and touristic potentials of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, attract new investors, and improve economic development of the whole region.
Mayor Skaka stressed that the candidature and hosting of Formula E race, as well as the preparations for the race present a great challenge, adding that that challenge will place Sarajevo next to Paris, Berlin, Hong Kong, Zurich and New York.

„For us, work on this project is an investment that would bring multiple benefits to the citizens. Formula E would promote the BiH capital, and have a great economic, sports and symbolic significance. The City of Sarajevo deserves this kind of spectacle. We have been taking concrete steps for several months with our partners to make the hosting of this race possible. The promotion of Formula E racing car and visit of our friends proves that we are going in the right direction “ said Mayor Skaka emphasizing that the local companies have shown good will and desire to participate in this project.


„From everything that I have heard and seen, Sarajevo has a potential for great business projects and we are very interested in investing into sports and technological sector. If we take into consideration how Formula E championship transformed metropolises such as New York, Hong Kong, Paris and other cities, it becomes clear what this unique platform would mean for putting Sarajevo on the global map„ said Edmund Chu, President of Techeetah team.

Jean-Eric Vergne, present Formula E champion, expressed his delight with the capital city of our country, noting that he believes that the streets of Sarajevo and the racing car would be a great match and that he would be very pleased if the streets of our capital city became one of his challenges.

Samir Cerić, CEO of Sarajevo Sports International, presented this idea and vision for Sarajevo with great confidence, in view of his present business successes and contacts, and the potential of our country and our young people. The fact that the representatives of this world competition, including the present Formula E world champion, have arrived in Sarajevo on his invitation, instil confidence in the successful implementation of this idea.

 

Mayors Skaka and Franković agreed on the establishment of tourist information points in Sarajevo and Dubrovnik

During the presentation “Sarajevo- the New Year’s Centre of the Region” held in Dubrovnik today, the Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka met with his colleague Mato Franković, the Mayor of Dubrovnik.

They discussed the present successful cooperation between the friendly cities of Sarajevo and Dubrovnik and the opportunities and areas in which it can be improved.

They endorsed a joint vision of cooperation through tourist promotion of destinations in both cities. In that regard, they agreed on the establishment of information tourist points on Sarajevo in Dubrovnik and vice versa, which would open up the possibility to obtain all information about the two cities and their tourist offers in one place. In that way, we will bring our natural beauty, customs, tourist potentials, cultural events, cultural-historic sites and gastronomy closer to our citizens.

Mayor Skaka made a promise to his colleague Franković that he will support the initiative to share a part of the atmosphere of the Sarajevo Film Festival with Dubrovnik.

This was the first official visit of Mayor Skaka to Dubrovnik.

The two cities have cherished and developed friendly ties for many years and signed a Charter on Mutual Cooperation in 2007.

Judge Meron held a lecture “Mechanism as a New Model of the International Criminal Tribunal” at the City Hall

Judge Meron, the President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals held a lecture on the topic “The Mechanism as the New Model of the International Criminal Tribunal” before an audience consisting of the representatives of government, legislature, expert and academic community, international organisations and associations.

On behalf of the host, the City of Sarajevo, which, as of 23 May this year, also houses the Sarajevo Information Centre on the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the audience was addressed by the Mayor Abdulah Skaka who pointed out that “We have started the project of opening of the Sarajevo Information Centre (ICS) with great enthusiasm, moral commitment and will to preserve and make accessible the legacy of the ICTY to researchers, the academic community, students, the general public and all the visitors of the Centre”. He added that the City of Sarajevo wanted to make a visible contribution to facing the past, peace and reconciliation through the establishment of the ICS.

For less than half a year from its opening, the Centre has organized over 200 lectures for local and foreign students, and its work has been recognized by diplomatic missions to BiH.

In his address, Judge Meron thanked Mayor Skaka and, Ivo Komšić, the President of the Mayor’s Council for the Information Centre on the ICTY, for the establishment of this institution.

“The goal is to help preserve and disseminate the legacy of the International Criminal Tribunal, to create a space, here at the centre of the communities which were most affected by its work, where students and professors, parents and children, as well as future generations can learn about the work of this pioneering International tribunal, and in a broader sense, study and think about the lessons from the past and consider for the sake of the future, what justice and calling for responsibility mean to us as individuals and members of local, national and global communities” said Judge Meron in his address and presented the Mayor wit a symbolic gift – a gavel which was previously used at the ICTY.

Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka and the Ambassador of the United States of America to BiH Maureen E. Cormack met today at the City Hall and had a tour of the Information Centre on the International Criminal Tribunal for he Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

This Centre provides the public with a direct and safe access to all the publicly available documents and archives of the ICTY. The Centre gathers and engages with students, civil society, journalists and representatives of the legislature actively involved in the issues of justice and reconciliation through exhibitions and interactive programmes.

The US Embassy in BiH commended the City of Sarajevo and the Information Centre for their commitment to lasting justice and peace in the region.

The management of “ZOI ‘84” and “Skenderija” welcomed the heads of missions of countries participating in EYOF 2019

On the third day of the Head of Missions’ Summit, there was a tour of the venues where young athletes will compete during EYOF 2019, which will be hosted by Sarajevo and East Sarajevo.

Accompanied by the management of KJP “ZOI ‘84” and KJP “Skednerija”, representatives of countries participating in EYOF 2019 were give a tour of the Olympic Mountains Igman and Bjelašnica where competitions in cross country, snowboard and team parallel downhill will be held. They also visited the sports halls “Juan Antonio Samaranch”/ Zetra and “Senderija” where competitions in ice hockey and speed skating will be held respectively.

Heads of missions toured the Olympic village, where they were shown the accommodation facilities, the main operational centre and the venue where award presentation ceremony will be held.

The EYOF 2019 Organising Committee has 86 days left until the biggest sports event in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

Skaka: We will show Sarajevo in the best possible light to the youth from across Europe

35 years ago, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted the best Olympics up to that time, and we are convinced that we will organize the best and most attended EYOF in history, said Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka at the press conference held at Hotel Termag in Jahorina.

The Conference was held as part of the EYOF 2019 participating countries head of missions’ seminar, the hosts of which are the cities of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo. The head of missions’ seminar is the biggest preparatory event for EYOF, which will take place in February next year. Apart from Mayor Skaka, the speakers at the conference included Siniša Kisić, President of BiH Olympic Committee, Senahid Godinjak manager of “EYOF 2019”, Mirela Mandal, representative of the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs, and Dragan Jaćimović, RS Assistant Minister of Family, Youth and Sports.

“We will show Sarajevo in the best possible light to the youth from across Europe. They will take with them the nicest memories and keep them for their entire lives, just as the world today still remembers the1984 WOG. The Olympic spirit and youth have once again shown that they can cross all barriers. This sport festival will have invaluable significance, not just for the development of sport, but also sport infrastructure, tourism, economy in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina” said Mayor Skaka.

Senahid Godinjak highlighted the importance of the seminar for the EYOF 2019 Organising Committee.

“We would like to present today and during these three days everything that we have prepared in our project planning documents per all the organizational segments” said Godinjak.
He said that the Progress Report was presented at the 47 EOC General Assembly held last week in Spain, where most of the countries confirmed their participation.

The Seminar was an occasion for the National Olympic Committees to obtain all necessary information concerning their participation at the EYOF 2019 and assess the progress in the building of infrastructure and Organising Committee’s plans for the final phase of preparation for the Festival.

All Executive Committee sectors presented the operational plans to the heads of missions. The seminar is taking take place until November 16.

Seminar of the Heads of Missions of countries participating at EYOF 2019

A three-day seminar of the Heads of Missions of all countries participating in the European Youth Olympic Festival – EYOF 2019, the host of which will be cities of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, has commenced today.

Seminar for representatives of countries participating in EYOF 2019 is an opportunity for the National Olympic Committees to obtain all information necessary for their participation at this winter youth festival. At the same time, the Head of Missions will be informed about the activities connected to infrastructural works at the venues, as well as the plans of the Organising Committee and all the sectors of the Executive Committee in the final phase of preparations for the festival.

The Heads of Missions’ Seminar was preceded by the Seminar of Technical Delegates for the Eight Sports which will be represented at EYOF 2019.

EYOF will be held in the period of February 9-16, in Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, with the participation of athletes from 46 countries. 1086 competitors and 750 members of National Olympic Committee delegations have applied for the event.

Japanese artists held a performance at the City Hall

Japanese artists held a performance consisting of calligraphy, Japanese dance and music played on a specific conch instrument.

The artists are members of WA Project Taishi Association, whose mission is to promote tolerance, harmony and peace through traditional Japanese cultural heritage.

 

On behalf of the City of Sarajevo, Deputy Milan Trivić greeted the guests from friendly Japan, pointing out that these events are an excellent opportunity to meet and learn more about each other.

The Ambassador of Japan to BiH H.E. Hideyuki Sakamoto also attended the reception at the City Hall.

Mayor Skaka visited the Office of Anadolu Agency: we will organize a spectacular opening of EYOF

Abdulah Skaka, Mayor of Sarajevo visited the Regional Office of Anadolu Agency (AA) for Balkans today and on that occasion announced the plans for spectacular opening of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), which will be held in February 2019 in Sarajevo and East Sarajevo.

According to the Mayor, the plan is to hold the EYOF opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium “Asim Ferhatović Hase”.

“When you think about the opening ceremony of the 1984 Olympic Games now, what everybody remembers is the hoisting of the flag and the moment the Olympic flame was lit. People tend to forget who took part in which competition, but they remember the opening ceremony” said Skaka.

The Mayor congratulated Anadolu Agency on their professionalism and expressed his hope that Sarajevo will be a good host to their office in the Balkans for many years to come.
Mayor Skaka was welcomed by Hakan Celik, manager of the Regional Office for the Balkans and the editorial board, which broadcasts news in over 13 world languages.

The Mayor said that the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympic Games, the best organized Games at that time, is one of Sarajevo’s trademarks.

“We have launched the reconstruction works on the Olympic Museum. Our wish was to open the doors in February 2019, but we have postponed it because we wish to dedicate one part of the museum to EYOF 2019. Our plan is to keep alive the memory of EYOF, as an event of great importance, at the Olympic Museum.” said Skaka.

Skaka used the opportunity to thank the Olympic Committee of Turkey and the City of Erzurum, the host of EYOF 2017, who had made possible for Sarajevo and East Sarajevo to organize this great sports event two years later.

Over 46 teams and delegations applied for EYOF 2019, which is a record number when it comes to this sport event. The hosts hope that 6000 people will visit the city during EYOF.

Mayor Skaka received the Deputy Ambassador of the United States to BiH, Ellen Germain for an introductory visit

Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka received the Deputy Ambassador of the United States to BiH Ellen Germain, and welcomed her and wished her a successful mandate in Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressing his belief in the continuation and strengthening of the cooperation between the City of Sarajevo and the Embassy of the United States of America in the forthcoming period.

The Mayor thanked the United States of America for all the assistance and support they had given to Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina to date, especially when it comes to removal of landmines.

I have paid a visit to Washington recently, where I signed on behalf of the City of Sarajevo an Agreement with the US organization Marshall Legacy Institute with the aim of clearing the capital city and the surrounding municipalities of both entities of landmines by September 2020, before the marking of the 25th anniversary of the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina” said Skaka.

The US official welcomed this initiative and the efforts of the City of Sarajevo Administration in that respect.

They also discussed the security situation in the city of Sarajevo, stressing that security, stability and peace are the main prerequisites for life.

The Mayor acquainted the Deputy Ambassador with the development projects which the City is currently implementing i.e. planning to implement in the field of infrastructure, education, culture, sport. He put special emphasis on the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in February next year which will be hosted by Sarajevo and East Sarajevo.

The high level guest expressed her pleasure with the fact that she will be spending her mandate in BiH and Sarajevo, the city which she considers to be a very pleasant place to live. She stressed the
conviction that the partner ties between the City of Sarajevo and the US Embassy will continue and be further strengthened through implementation of new initiatives and projects.
The reform process, the aim of which is full integration of BiH into EU and NATO was also discussed in the meeting.
