Bascarsija

Gazi Husref-bey's covered market building

This massive basilica-like stone building extends in length of 109 meters along the street bearing the same name. It was built by the Ragusa masters by the order of the then Bosnian sandzak-bey (governor) Gazi Husref-bey, in period from 1542 to 1543.

SARAJEVO – A PEACE MESSENGER CITY

 

The city of Sarajevo was granted the membership in the International Association of Peace Messenger Cities, and thus became the 83rd member of the family of the cities worldwide. Sarajevo was nominated for the membership in the Association at the IAPMC General Assembly session in New Heaven (USA) in 2004, and officially accepted on 01-02/09/2005 during the 18th General Assembly session in Slovenj Gradec, the town which nominated Sarajevo for the membership.The International Association of Peace Messenger Cities was founded in 1982, by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in order to strengthen status and role of the cities while creating peace culture.The Association’s foundation was sponsored by the United Nations and proclaimed the International Association of Peace Messenger Cities (IAPMC). In the course of the 18th IAPMC General Assembly session in Slovenj Gradec, a new IAMPC webpage was promoted, and this is where all the information about the Association’s activities and cities-members can be found. CITY OF SARAJEVO - MEMBER OF EUROCITIES

 

City of Sarajevo officially became a joined member of the European Cities’ Network – EUROCITES, at the annual global meeting held on November 22, 2005, in the French city of Lyon. Prior the official act of joining the Network, EUROCITIES Executive Committee brought a decision to accept Sarajevo’s nomination for the joined membership in the same, on September 30, 2005, at the meeting in Brussels, while Sarajevo City Council brought a decision on city’s entrance into the EUROCITIES, in July, 2005.


EUROCITIES' objectives are establishment of the cooperation network amongst major cities of the European metropolises and local authorities, in the Europe, as well as promotion of the joint EUROCITIES’ interests, being centers of economic, technological, social, and cultural development. Never the less, great importance lies in the promotion and representation of the joint EUROCITIES’ interests in the consultant and decision processes of the EU institutions, as well as of those EUROCITIES members’ opposite interests in any area or related to any EU institution’s issue.
